I ran for Coach Grant at PHS from 2011-2015. I have many fond memories of him, he was truly like a father to us girls. I remember him pulling me off the track to give me my first real pair of running shoes after seeing me running around in cheap, non supportive shoes. I remember in the heat of Spring, him running with his distance girls on the toughest training days. He would make sure our locker room was stocked up with feminine products, and we would tease him for getting a team full of Latina and black girls weak hair ties. On the hottest days, as well as the coldest and rainiest you would always catch him with a smile and he was always going to crack a few “dad jokes”. The only times I’ve ever seen him upset, would rarely be when we messed up, but when he would defend us at meets. I have many many fond, warm, loving memories. My favorite ever will be my 18th birthday. Grant’s birthday was the day after mine, and that weekend we were running at states. He made sure we stopped for ice cream to celebrate. He truly was a father figure in so many young people’s lives. He was full of love, humor, and life. My deepest condolences to his wonderful family who I remember having met throughout the years. Having known him, I understand the tremendous loss they must feel. I pray they take comfort in knowing how much he loved his family, what a wonderful person he was and how much of a positive influence he made during his time on earth. May he always rest in peace.

We were very saddened to hear of Mike's too soon passing. Mike was a truly kind and caring person; he was a great Coach to so many of the kids of Totowa and made each child feel valued. He was also a loving father and husband and we send our sincere condolences to his family. The Ashworth Family

Words cannot express the sorrow we feel for Michael's family. Our cousin, Maureen, shared the terrible news. Even though we never met Michael we know he was an amazing man and a devoted husband, father, and son. He is now in God's loving embrace. His love will always be a part of you all. May he rest in Peace.
With Love and Deepest Sympathy,
Johnny and Diana Peschio

Michael Grant was my wrestling coach at Passaic High School for the 2005 & 2006 seasons. Every day, he came in with a passion to help us become the best wrestlers, students, and people that we could possibly become. Every day, he would push us to our limits.
There was a time during the 2006 season that he would ask me obscure questions like, “What’s your favorite subject in school?” You know, things that you normally wouldn’t expect from your wrestling coach. Later, I would find out that he was using the questions to submit a scholarship application on my behalf. That’s who he was - an advocate for all students.
The lessons that he taught me through his altruistic nature will forever stay with me. He was truly a teacher, even to those he just coached. I know his legacy will forever live on - he has touched innumerable lives.
Rest in peace, Coach.

It was a pleasure and honor to know Mike as a friend and to work with him at PHS. He epitomized what a true teacher/coach should be and exemplified this everyday with his students and colleagues. His easy smile, corny jokes and down to earth, approachable nature made him both popular and well respected by all. He was always there to lend a hand, help a student or colleague in need or just bring positivity to the situation. His love for teaching and coaching was incredible, only to be surpassed by his love for his wife Carla and his three sons. He will be sorely missed but will definitely be guiding us from above. Rest in peace Mike. You're well loved and will never be forgotten.

Months ago I noticed a Go Fund Me page that was created for Mike, Carla and their children. It was sad to think about the challenges and journey that they would endure. Keeping them in my thoughts and prayers I had hoped for miracles. It’s been years since I spoke with Mike but I can truly say as a runner and wrestler at Passaic Valley he was an athlete with talent and an inspiration. He went on to Columbia University still running and at one point in time he became an assistant coach at P.V. . A few years later at a county track meet he was proud to share with me that he now coached and taught at Passaic High School. Mike was always respectful and kind. It was a pleasure to know he was successful and that he continued to be an inspiration.
With sadness and pain I read of his passing, having left his family and friends , but knowing he would always be in their hearts. . Mike touched many lives in his time. I’m so glad to have known Mike and will continue to keep Carla, his family and friends in my thoughts throughout the days ahead. May he rest peacefully and may his legacy live on in the many lives he touched.

I was absolutely devastated to learn of Mike's passing yesterday. My heart and sincerest condolences go out to Carla, Mike's sons and the rest of their family. Some of my fondest memories in my life were spent on a trail or a track with Mike and the rest of our team. It's hard to describe how a 10 mile run or a grueling track workout that turns your legs to Jell-O can bond people together. I suspect for most in this photo it wasn't about wins and losses, personal bests and medals; it was simply about doing something really hard with your friends. Well, at least that's how I felt. Mike was an easy leader to follow and his endless optimism and tireless work ethic touched each one of us. I'm not surprised to see that he continued make a difference in any life he came across for the rest of his life. I'm grateful that I got to be Mike's teammate and even more lucky that I was his friend. The universe works in mysterious ways, but it brought us back together with another friend briefly for a few hours last fall. I'll remember that evening fondly. For all of Mike's friends and family I wish you nothing but peace and strength during this extremely difficult time.

Mike, you will forever hold a special place in my heart. I met you 22 years ago at PHS, and you were always the same: a great guy, an excellent teacher, a friend to all, and an outstanding husband and father. You tutored my daughter when she was twelve years old, and later, you became colleagues, all of us working in the same school, but the special place I hold in my heart is that you tutored me to get through my last class of college, which took years. You spent hours helping me! I share this degree with you and will always be grateful. Rest in Eternal light and Peace, my friend, We will miss you .

Dear Carla and Family-
I met Mike playing soccer Sunday mornings in North Caldwell. While he was a great and very competitive player, the thing I loved most about him is how he kept us all smiling. He was always so funny and kind to all. Everyone could tell instantly he was just a great person. It was no surprise to me when I found out he was a lifelong teacher and coach... Just a great person who dedicated his life to making the world a better place. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
All my best, Derek

“Suddenly you were gone, from all the lives you left your mark upon.
Tried to believe, but you know it’s no good. This is something that just can’t be understood.” - Neil Peart
My most striking memory of Michael Grant was how selfless he was. He would listen to you like you were the most important person in the world. When my wife Andrea was diagnosed with head/neck cancer during the Pandemic, he would always talk with me to ask if there was anything he could do, and I mean anything. When I look back on those conversations I still remember his sincerity, he was always so genuine, a real true salt of earth person. He was my friend, we were supposed to retire together, and I am NOT OK with this. I miss him already so much. God Bless and keep Carla, Luca, Marco & Nico warm with the light of God’s new Angel in Heaven.
Dear Hero, how can I cry? When now I’ve discovered how to fly? Dear Hero, I can finally see, there’s no need to wait, my Hero is me.
