Obituary of Dorothy Pilone

Dorothy Pilone, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at home with family on February 18, 2023. She was predeceased by her husband and two daughters. Dorothy, affectionately known as "Dot" or "Dottie" by those who knew and loved her, was born on July 24, 1924 to Mary and Jack Lopolo, and was raised in Paterson, NJ. As a teenager, she broke through stereotypes as the first "girl courier" and later became a teller at the First National Bank in Paterson. She married Nunzio "Butch" Pilone (of Pilone's Meat Market in Paterson) and moved to North-Haledon. She later earned her beautician's license and went on to own her own beauty shop, "Dottie-Jan", located in Hawthorne. She was a lifelong Yankees and Jets fan and counted dancing and RVing as favorite activities with her husband. In 1977 they retired to New Haven, Vermont. After 36 years of marriage and following Nunzio's death in 1985, Dorothy went to stay with her daughter, Janet, and her husband, Barrie, and her two grandchildren, Christa and Timothy, in Monroe, New York. She traveled with them to Disney World, Cooperstown, Lancaster and Gettysburg, PA and other exciting places. She continued RVing with them and her favorite camping spot was Lake George, NY where she enjoyed people-watching from the screenhouse. She loved shopping, especially for curtains and shoes! Her family hosted three surprise birthday parties for her over the years and they were blessed to have her present for all birthdays, holidays, graduations, weddings, births, and other milestones. In more recent years, Dorothy enjoyed reading romance novels, playing solitaire, and watching British dramas. She also liked doing jigsaw puzzles, coloring, and FaceTiming with family and friends. Dorothy is greatly loved as a Mom, Nana, Gram, and Great-Gram, and is survived by her daughter Janet (Pilone) Bolen and her husband Barrie, her granddaughter, Christa Bolen-Lange and her husband Samuel, and her grandson Timothy and his wife Katherine, as well as two great-grandchildren, Liam and Finley. Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral services at the Festa Memorial Funeral Home, 111 Union Blvd., Totowa on Friday at 10:00 AM. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Totowa. Friends may visit Thursday from 3-7 PM. In lieu of flowers donations made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, St Jude's Hospital, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
