I met George Petersen the summer of 1959. we were both at a summer journalism course at Catholic University. I was with 3 other girls sent by our small school to prepare us for being editors of the school newspaper. George and his friend I believe, were charmed by our Southern accent. We ate lunch and went sightseeing after classes. It was an exciting summer for 15 yr. olds!

To Rita and Family, we just found out today of George's passing. Remembering the old days at St Paul Church when your boys were so little, the CROP walks and George always having time for a conversation. Our deepest sympathies to you and the family, may he rest in peace.

I am saddened to hear of George's passing. He was a friend, fellow backpacker, Scouter. Reflected in everything he did was his sincere concern for us all. Our family remembers the Mahjong "tournaments"' family camping trips and backyard family picnics, bluefish on the grill! "just try it" he would say. I imagine George has caught up with family & friends by now, Frank Rodimer et al. Hoping he'll run into our Ryan, maybe teach him to fish.
Sincere condolences Rita & Family.

It saddens me to learn George is gone from this Earth as he truly cared about the planet and mankind. To me George was a concerned and involved citizen and kind to all that knew him. I was fortunate to teach along side him for the thirteen years I taught in Oakland and spent many hours as a fellow Team member collaborating lessons and discussing the students we shared. George was a consummate educator who possessed a keen sense of humor, professional attitude, patience, and a wide array of knowledge not only as a Reading Specialist, but knowledgeable in many subjects. When I left Oakland to expand my horizons in the Southwest, George wrote me a touching farewell note still in my possession. My sincere condolences to his lovely wife Rita and wonderful sons.

Hi Petersen family,
I only recently started attending the East Jersey TU organization.
I met a got to know George at the EJTU Wayne fly tying class.
It was such a pleasure to get to know him while he taught me fly tying.
It was also special because he taught me one on one much of the 8 sessions.
We talked about life experiences, family, teaching and fishing.
He was very generous with his life experience and encouragement.
I'll miss seeing him at the next Wayne fly tying class.
My condolences to the George Petersen family.

There are so many memories of Mr. Petersen that I will have with me always. I will remember silly things like his unwavering adherence to the speed limit and the way that he'd start speaking German around the campfire back in the more lawless days of Troop 7 camping trips. I will also remember that he introduced a culinary wimp to pan-fried venison and blackened catfish (with a cast iron skillet, outdoor propane grill and a three-alarm billowing smoke cloud), and even tried to build on the perfection that is the Taylor ham and cheese sandwich (on toast with onions sauteed in margarine, never butter, and I still make it that way sometimes and think of him). I will remember him pulling me aside one day to give me a quiet word of encouragement express faith in me when no one else would have done so. He didn't need to do it, but he did it anyway, and I've remembered that conversation ever since.
But these memories are only pieces of the past to carry into the future, and what I will be able to carry forward with me is the knowledge that I will see Mr. Petersen when I am enjoying a day outdoors, I will hear him in the voices of the Petersen boys (and it has been too long), and I will feel the spirit of him whenever a person goes out of his or her way to make another person feel welcome and part of the family.
Rest in peace, Mr. Petersen.

I remember George visiting my Kdg class at Heights School when these young students had to take a standardized test. George would give each child a "SPECIAL" pencil which he called Peterson's pencils. He put my students at ease. He was a freindly and very good Reading Specialist. He will be missed. RIP George.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Petersen family. Some of my fondest memories growing up was camping with Troop #7, especially with your family. May Mr. P rest in peace. With love, Tim St. Clair aka "Lazer Lips" aka "Spike."
