Verilla, John Dominic, age 86 of Toms River, died Thursday, Feb. 13 at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Born in Paterson, he retired from a 45 year career with the Paterson N.J. Board of Education in 1983 and moved to Toms River in 1985. As a young man in the 1930s, he was a Diamond Gloves Boxer who trained under the renowned Whitey Plunkett and exhibited with Featherweight Champion Patsy OConnor. He attended Passaic County Technical High School and was an active volunteer with the St. Anthonys Parish Youth Program in Paterson. He was an Administrator for the St. Donato Social & Pleasure Club in Paterson and a Lifetime Member of the Seaside Heights Fishing Club. He was an avid fisherman, gardener, and boxing fan. A devoted husband and father, his happiest times were spent with his two adored grandsons. Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years, Viola (nee Natale) Verilla, his son John M. Verilla and Kathleen of Hackettstown; his devoted son and daughter in law, Joseph V. Verilla and Betty of Wayne; his beloved daughter and son in law, Marie Verilla and Augustine Foglio II of Toms River; two grandsons, Neil John Verilla Foglio and James Austin Verilla Foglio of Toms River; two brothers, Martin of San Marcos, California and Dominic of Kinnelon; a brother Adam died 2/14/ 2003. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral from the Festa Memorial Funeral Home, 111 Union Boulevard, Totowa, on Tuesday at 8:45 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Anthonys R.C. Church, Paterson at 9:30 AM. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Totowa. Friends may call Monday 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 P.M.
