OBITUARY
Robert J. Varettoni age 73 of Totowa died Monday. Born in Passaic, NJ he lived in Budd Lake then in Clifton before moving to Totowa in 1959. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Seton Hall University in June 1953. After his commissioning at the Navys Officer Candidate School in Newport R.I. in November 1953, he served as a Communications Officer for two years aboard the carrier, USS Midway, in both the Mediterranean and Far East areas, and was later assigned to the Office of Naval Intelligence in New York City as Officer-in-Charge, District Intelligence, Unit NINE, performing investigative and counterintelligence duties. Following his release from active duty in 1956, he entered upon a 34-year executive career with the New York Telephone Company before retiring in 1990. At the same time he remained active in the Naval Reserve Intelligence Program, serving in a number of command billets while rising to the rank of Captain. Included in this tour was his appoinment on October 1, 1980 as Reserve Intelligence Area Coordinator for Area 17. At the conclusion of this tour, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal by the Secretary of the Navy. He was also the recipient of the THIRD Naval District Intelligence Award, the Navy Commendation Medal, the European Defense Medal, the American Defense Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the Naval Reserve Medal. Mr. Varettoni was a Navy veteran during the Korean Conflict and a parishioner of St. James R.C. Church, Totowa.
