Our sincere sympathy on the loss of Harry, my good friend and supporter of many years, since I served as First Ward Councilman and then Mayor of Montclair. He was also a great inspiration to me as I have taught Political Scinece at Montclair State U. for the last 10 years.....Montclair has lost a great resident and I have lost a good friend. Jiffy,
We had hoped to get to the service this morning, but with the weather we did not. Our sincerest sympathy for you and Tom and the family. We enjoyed your dad as a friendly neighbor who was always happy to see us He was a loving father and I am sure you will miss him.

It is with sadness that I read of Harry Balfe's passing. I was a student of Dr. Balfe in the Political Science Department at Montclair State too many years ago. His classes were always filled with lively discussion. I kept in touch with him for many years, as we served on a committee together to honor the memory of Dr. E.B. Fincher, another longtime beloved political science professor at the college. I am sorry that I hadn't seen or reached out to him in recent year. He will be sorely missed.

I was looking for background information about Harry's beloved wife, Judy, when I discovered this notice. I just wanted their children Jiffy and Tom who I knew as teenagers, that many of your parent;s colleagues thought so highly of them Judy was my best friend and I think about her often, always with great fondness and miss her. And Harry was always such a lively and engaged person who was irrepressible and so civic minded. I think I can say for many of us in the academic community who were involved in the arts and in politics that they were a couple so man yof us miss. I also wanted to let you know that Judy's colleagues at the conference on Social Theory, Politics and the Arts, which Judy was a founder of, is still going strong and has relatively formally joined up with the Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society (which Judy was the executive Editor for in the 1990s.) A year after Judy died, the conference started giving an award to the best graduate student presentation in honor of Judy's legacy of mentoring young scholars in the field. In 2019, we are shifting the award to the best annual article in the Journal of Arts management, Law and society which will be announced each year the the Annual STPA conference. The memory and good works of Judy and Harry continue to live on.
