As a child hearing the signature licks and sounds of the guitarist in certain bands, I knew he was more than a "stand out" and realized he was the powerful essence of the elevation that was delivering the goods and so he made it an easy ride. There are bluesmen and then there are born bluesmen. And those who know who they are "speaking" to. I am his brother by another mother.

I was very fortunate to meet Hubert Sumlin while attending The Johnny (Chuck Berrys original pianist) Johnson Blues Festival in Fairmont West Virginia in the summer of 2003. I immediately fell in love with Mr. Sumlin and his stories. I asked him if it was o.k. to video him telling some of his stories and at the time I had just went back to school for digital film studies. I used the footage to practice editing techniques and what came out was a cool little short. I'd always hoped someday I could run into him again. As a bassist of 26 years myself I had a great appreciation for what he had to say that day. At the very end of the short he his seen pointing at (me) the camera and some of the live shows music fades in, at that moment he is telling me to keep pressing on and that I am "one of the best" As a musician, attending the weekend festival and meeting Mr. Sumlin will live with me forever. God Bless you and Peace be with you Hubert Sumlin. It sure was great to run into you. Keep Rock'n! With warm regards, Tom O'Shanick I put the video up on Vimeo today if anyones interested to view it: http://vimeo.com/33479659

I had the good fortune to meet Hubert on three occasions, one as an audience member and twice as an event promoter. The first time he did an event for us, he had a couple of hours to kill and my drummer (we were opening the event) managed to get Hubert to jam with us in our garage rehersal space. Hubert was warm, encoraging, open ... in short everyhting you all know he was. He befriended (alomost)everyone he ever met and I can say meeting him (and later sharing the stage at his invitation) was the high point of my life on the fringes of music. To this day, my drummer insists it was Huberts' genuine encouragement to "just play what you feel" that opened up my playing. More importantly, he opened my heart. I (and the world) will miss him.

I got to see Hubert perform on stage earlier this year with Big Head Todd. After listening to him and everyone he influenced for decades, it was a pleasure and a thrill that I will never forget. Even in his "weaker" days, he was impeccably dressed and had a smile that flooded the entire room. He played the guitar and was truly alive. It was an extraordinary moment. A true living legend that. Good thing that legends live on. I am so grateful for Hubert.

Years ago a friend and myself went to see Mr. Sumlin at a show in Dearborn, Mi. Both of us were huge Howlin Wolf fans and we were excited to finally get to see the guitarist who was so integral to Wolf's sound. We were NOT dissappointed. After the show Mr. Sumlin was so gracious and kind sigining autographs and giving out hugs to the many who came to see him. I count myself to be one of the lucky ones who got that hug. Being a guitarist myself I know I can never sound like Hubert and would never try to but I remain hugely inluenced by his singular style. RIP,Hubert. Give the Wolf my regards.

Hubert gave us the most special of all gifts. Yes, of course, we all know he was a stellar musician. His performances lit up the stage. He was awarded high recognition by many. All this I will remember, but what I shall treasure always is that beaming smile: The one that greeted me, and everyone, in a way that made you feel that you were exactly the person he was waiting to see at that very moment. His contagious zest for life made it impossible to be anything but joyful in his presence. So many stories, but among the more recent: In early 2010, sitting with Hubert stageside at Great American Music Hall (San Francisco) during concert for the Scott Rosenbaum/Joseph White film “Once & For All, Toni Ann signaled that Hubert’s moment to go onstage arrived. He turns to me, pats my hand and says, “Now, don’t go nowhere, I’ll be right back! With Hubert, it wasn’t just a passing statement. He looked you in the eye and meant it. . Each delicious encounter with Hubert was like that. That’s the way he seemed to face life: He looked life in the eye, and meant every note. — I am so grateful for every smile, every hug, every note he gave me-and everyone. Love always, and wherever. See ya later , friend. Barbara
